The origin of flamenco in Andalusia remains unknown due to the multiple cultures that existed in this region. Its development throughout Andalusia has multiple origins described, among them the Zambra del Sacromonte, the Moorish Zambra or the Gypsy Zambra, which today is a capital part of the flamenco culture. We will try to clarify the concept, its origin and development throughout this post.

Bailaora Alba Heredia

¿What is the Zambra?

As we already know, the gypsy culture is not the only one that has taken place in Granada, and in the same way, the Arab culture has contributed some customs, among them, the zambra. The Moorish zambra is the result of variations in Moorish dances, dances inspired by the Arabs. The Moors were the Muslims of al-Andalus.

The word Zambra can be related to two Arabic words, such as the zamra (toccata) or the traditional Arabic zamara (musicians). The gypsy zambra, as its name suggests, is a dance developed mainly by the gypsy race in the caves of Sacromonte in Granada and in the caves of Almería.

During the stay of the gypsies in the caves of Sacromonte, their maximum expression was flamenco, in addition to their main source of income, since they kept pilgrims entertained and passed on these dances and inspiration from generation to generation.

Origins and developement of the Zambra

The Sacromonte neighborhood achieved its maximum splendor during the 60s, where most of its population handled singing, dancing or instruments. The gypsy zambra from the Moorish zambra, arises as the fusion of three dances that represented a different moment during the same gypsy wedding: the cachucha, the fly and the alboreá.

Some of the characteristic elements of these dances were: it was danced with bare feet, at the top a white shirt tied below the chest and at the bottom a skirt with wide pleats and tied at the hip.

The history of the Gypsy Zambra stopped during the Inquisition of the 16th century, where it was banned as it was considered an unworthy dance. From the 19th century on, flamenco began to take on importance as a musical art, and the gypsies of Sacromonte always appeared reflected by the romantic writers.

foto albayzin desde alhambra

The so-called romantic travelers imagined gypsies singing and dancing flamenco, and this image is so accentuated about them that they began to do these dances for tourists with flamenco dress. It was at this time that the Sacromonte caves became a symbol in Spanish culture.

La zambra gitana es Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial de la Humanidad

The Granada City Council began the procedures in February 2019 with the aim that UNESCO consider the gypsy zambra Intangible Heritage of Humanity. The zambras active at that time were a vital support, such as: Venta del Gallo, Los Tarantos, La Rocío, María La Canastera and other very important flamenco figures.

Flamenco Singing technique

We all know what flamenco is, but perhaps we do not give the importance it deserves to cante (flamenco singing), one of the most indispensable elements in this art. Flamenco singing is usually defined as one that is Andalusian but with gypsie notes, with great passion.

In this post we have decided to focus on this discipline within flamenco, as like dance and guitar, flamenco singing also has its characteristics, its technique and it is good to to know the styles that each singer uses, besides it will help us to differentiate it from other singing styiles.

Regarding the history of flamenco singing as well as flamenco itself, it is not entirely clear, although it is believed that it was originated from the mixture of Arab, Jewish and Christian cultures, in addition to that of the gypsies themselves.

There is no reference whatsoever about the first cantaores (singers) and it is that, it is thought that this art was born within the daily life of the gypsies, as a way to express their problems, loves…

Flamenco is today known throughout the world, being a typical part of Spanish art, and forming part of the culture of Andalusia. Flamenco singing has evolved to what know today, there are simpler cantes and others, which are mixtures of different styles.

To know well the technique of flamenco singing, it is essential to know that it is a very demanding discipline and to understand from the first moment what is done with the voice, in addition to understanding that the singer must feel it and that it has to come from his very inside.

There is no single technique to sing flamenco, but many, although it is true that there is a common method of singing it based on the way of expressing that cante with its melody and its way of phrasing.

Flamenco Tradicional

4 key points to consider when singing flamenco

Frm casa del arte flamenco, we think it´s important not just to know our culture, but communicating it outside, because of this we consider that the teaching and teachers of Flamenco Techniques must be professional and qualified people. The singing requires a good control of the throat and its very important to pay attention to prevent injuries when singing flamenco.

Its also very important to know that any person can sing flamenco, because there is no need for a special kind of voice for it. Every single voice is valid for cante flamenco, but it requires a bit of tuning.

Memorizing and listening, factors for a good flamenco singing

One of the factors, is to memorize and listen, it seems simple, right? You have to know how to imitate and capture all the vocal resources and the way of phrasing to make the flamenco cante sound, since there is nothing written and everything has been passed from generation to generation by word of mouth.

There has to be straight contact between the cantaor and the student, or continuous listening to recordings in order to more easily grasp all these elements of flamenco singing. You have to listen and listen, since this is the only way to assimilate and perfectly imitate all the vocal resources used in this cante. Afterwards, you just have to sing with your natural voice, without forcing it, since it can cause injuries to your throat.

We advise you that while you sing, you take into account your body awareness, that is, you know how to transmit what your body feels at that moment.

Another important factor for flamenco singing: The spoken voice

When it comes to singing, you have to be fluent in the language you are going to sing, as well as to understand perfectly everything that is being said, in order to be able to interpret it.

In flamenco singing, the ideal voice sound that one tries to achieve is a fat sound, with low harmonics. At this point, underline that you never have to force your voice, flamenco is sung with a natural voice, in addition, we avoid possible damage to the larynx or vocal cords. We have to achieve a cracked voice typical of flamenco singing for this: we must have a hot voice; having prior knowledge of the melody of the song to be performed, body awareness… in short, having everything under control; and have an adequate knowledge of your own body.

When singing with a natural voice, you do not have to be aware of where to place your voice, or where to put your tongue, thus avoiding somewhat forced sensations.

Body awareness, the essential factor to sing flamenco

When flamenco is sung, we must always take into account our body consciousness, feel our whole body while singing. We know that it is complicated and requires a great effort that with practice gradually takes hold. You have to achieve that connection with the body while singing flamenco, because if we lose concentration with our body, it causes the cante to lose strength.

We have to have a great body awareness when singing flamenco, since this will help us to dominate the muscles around the diaphragm so that the air does not go out of control. It is necessary to control the diaphragm through the abdominal girdle in order to manage the air, ensuring that it does not escape.

In flamenco singing, the face also stands out a lot within the body consciousness. The face is the reflection of the soul and in this case, the faces and gestures that are made with it when singing are very characteristic of this art, transmitting all kinds of feelings.

It seems that the gestures that appear on the face when flamenco is sung, come out alone, that is, they appear as a consequence of the technique itself, or trying to find the ideal sound, are typical of this cante. In short, body awareness in the face serves to activate facial resonators, which act as sound filters. It has also been observed that in this way, the lyrics of the song are better understood, at the same time that it is given greater feeling, expression.

The famous phrasing of flamenco singing

Phrasing is another of the necessary requirements to be able to sing flamenco, but … What exactly is phrasing? It is a musical technique where notes, timbres, rhythmic figures are combined … forming phrases full of musical meaning so characteristic of flamenco. But also, in the case of this cante, ornamentation is added, which are the different effects, ornaments, noises that are made when singing flamenco and give it that touch, that expressiveness typical of this beautiful art.

This typical flamenco phrasing is often referred to as vocal resources and they are classified into ornaments, effects, vibratos and attacks.

This phrasing could be said to be the characteristic element of flamenco, since, no matter your tone of voice, your timbre, if you learn flamenco phrasing you will get your cante to be too.

In conclusion, with all that has been said about the technique of flamenco singing so far, we can see that it is essential to practice and listen to a lot of cante, to do it with a spoken voice, to learn body awareness to involve the whole body in the cante and to be able to phrase to achieve authentic flamenco singing.

The 24th Festival de Jerez, taking place between February 21st and March 7th will display its creative potential with a dozen premieres: a not to be missed meeting for cante, guitar and dance with artists like Rubén Olmo and Rafaela Carrasco performing.

The Festival de Jerez was born in 1996 with the idea of bringing different flows together inside of flamenco style in order to show the historic heritage of Jerez: it is one of the top flamenco festivals with solera music in the country!

This year, the Festival de Jerez aims to focus on the artists and to take risks. “A leap in the dark: to produce, to create, to formulate the best possible proposal and the fact that the most veteran artists as well as new generations perform in the Festival de Jerez” states the institution.

The risk also means to welcome new artists like Rafaela Carrasco or Manuel Liñán, who head the poster: keep reading to find out about all the news of The Festival de Jerez 2020.

From Carrasco to Cabrero

Carrasco and Liñán will be joined by flamenco classics like El Cabrero, who will use the festival’s stages as part of his farewell tour of the stages.

We`ll have the show of Antonio El Pipa, Andrés Peña and Pilar Ogalla, Marcos Flores and the Shoji Kojima Company. According to the Mayor of Jerez, Mamen Sánchez, all of them make the event “an icon for the city” and “a platform for international promotion. For the mayor, the creative energy of the poster is projected in works such as those that will also be shown in Sala Paúl: those of Belén Maya, Paula Comitre, Hiniesta Cortés and Carmen Herrera.

National Dance Award winners such as Sara Baras

Is important talk about the presence of National Dance Awards such as Sara Baras, Liñán and Rubén Olmo, Olga Pericet or El Farru, who replaces Isabel Bayona. Javier Latorre will be present at the festival in his role as choreographer.

Another interesting point on the bill is the “firm commitment to the creative evolution of flamenco, the development of its forms of expression and the modernisation – from tradition – of its languages”. This involves the launch of cycles such as ‘La Fiesta’, which aims to focus on the festive nature of flamenco, “based on its links to unique geographical locations”.

More than flamenco at the 24th Jerez Festival 2020

The 24th Festival de Jerez 2020 will go beyond the musical aspect of flamenco; among other initiatives, it will do so thanks to the launch of ‘Poderío’, an exhibition in which Teresa Torres, designer, and Beatriz Hidalgo, photographer, have worked. The exhibition, which can be visited until 18 March in the Cloisters of Santo Domingo, will show fifteen snapshots of fifteen flamenco artists.

To achieve the photographs, both professionals have spent two years since the project began, “and 8 months of work,” says Beatriz Hidalgo. “We wanted them not to be posed photos, something I think we have achieved with the exhibition”.

Another of the many branches that the 24th Festival de Jerez 2020 will include will be gastronomy; the flamenco peñas will put on a series of shows at midday that will feature local cuisine. An event that, once again, will seek to project Jerez abroad by relying on the tourist potential of an event that constitutes “a first-rate cultural destination”. All in all, the Jerez festival is positioned as necessary in the framework of the city’s candidacy to become European Capital of Culture in 2031.

Granada is not a capital of flamenco only for being in the south of the Iberian Peninsula; it is a neuralgic place of this culture thanks to the artists who grew up here. The Nasrid province of Granada has always had a number of cantaores, bailaroes or guitarists, who ended up triumphing worldly: los Morente, the cantaora Marina Heredia, but also los Habichuela, one of the most famous flamenco dynasty with the greatest impact.

Juan Habichuela, a flamenco legend

Juan Carmona Carmona (Granada, 1933), died in 2016. Although he was not the first of the Habichuela’s lineage – it is said it was his grandfather, Habichuela El Viejo – he is definitely one of those who put the dynasty under the spotlight.

He started as a bailaor but, soon, started playing guitar. It was his thing and he proved it as, in a few time he had gained the respect of the flamenco’s circle: in 1994, he won two prizes: the Compás del Cante award from Fundación Cruzcampo, and the Galardón Calle de Alcalá award on its second edition, from Madrid-born flamenco critics and writers.

Juan developed his carrier and settled as a reference guitarist. He was in New York with Manuela Vargas and played guitar with famous personalities like Manolo Caracol, Marina Heredia and José Mercé. He made Granada and his surname, los Habichuela, worldly famous.

Pepe Habichuela: “Los Habichuela now have a unique signature”

A year ago, José Antonio Carmona Carmona (Granada, 1944), Juan Carmona Carmona’s brother, won a Gold Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts. This was a turning point who turned Pepe Habichuelas, as people call him, into one of the greatest artist in the genre.

In a recent interview published by the daily newspaper Granada Hoy, Pepe said he was born 75 years ago in a cave of Cuesta de Alhacaba hill. He highlighted how flamenco changed and how it became more important. “Now, things are put in their proper place: flamenco is one of the most important music genre of the year”.

Pepe Habichuela, who played guitar in the caves of Sacromonte at the age of 13 when “flamenco artists were completely disregarded” is now very happy to see how people see this music genre nowadays. He then carried on the interview with the journalist Isabel Vargas, highlighting the importance of his dynasty, los Habichuela, in flamenco’s stunning growth: “We, los Habichuelas, created a style with a special way of playing guitar. We have a unique signature.” A signature they achieved through efforts and hard work, of course, “by playing very vigorously and frequently; there were always many people, rounds of applause and many people raising their voice”.

Tribute to Rafael Habichuela

The aforementioned Juan Habichuela is Juan José Carmona (El Camborio), y Antonio Carmona’s father. Both were part of the popular group of flamenco fusion, Ketama. The lineage of los Habichuela goes even further, as several family members proudly bear this surname worldly, bringing the family’s signature to different stages.

Casa del Arte Flamenco worked with artists like Rafael Santiago Gómez, better known as Rafalín Habichuela.

As you can read on his data sheet, – you can also see the other artists’ data- he was born on August 14, 1961 in the cuestas del Albaicín bajo and he is Juan and Luis Habichuela’s nephew, but also Tía Marina Habichuela’s grandson.

Since he started playing guitar at the age of 9, Rafael has been able to play along with cantaores like Carmen Linares, Enrique Morente or José Mercé because, just as he narrates “He is a folk music lover” but also an expert in setting the tone for the cantaor, to give the perfect touch, just as Juan Habichuela himself did.

Rafalín Habichuela now temporary stopped his carrier due to health problems and this is why we will pay tribute to him on January 31 with the presence of artists like Grupo Ketama, Pepe Luis Carmona, Kiki Morente, El Parrón, David de Jacoba, Pedro el Granaíno, Curro Albayzin, Pepe Habichuela, Juan Habichuela nieto, Carlos de Jacoba, Eva la Yerbabuena, La Moneta and many more.

The potential of music in people with mental disorders is demonstrated in the scientific literature. When we talk about flamenco, the benefits multiply. Experts allude to flamenco -its dances and songs- as a treatment to raise self-esteem in moments of weakness, but also as a therapy to make the side effects of certain drugs more bearable.

“The grace is inside all people”.

Every Monday at six in the afternoon, at the headquarters of the Andalusian Federation of Mental Health Associations (Seville), Carlos Sepúlveda, psychologist and flamenco enthusiast, gives his workshop called ‘In the first person’. The receptors, people with cerebral palsy who are taught that flamenco can be a way out to overcome some of the obstacles of their illness.

Based on the “creative learning of their dance”, the Asociación Autoestima Flamenca -of which Sepúlveda is his founder-, has been promoting for years, through various workshops, the study, practice and diffusion of flamenco as a musical genre with possible benefits for personal, educational, personal, social and healthy growth.

This association was born in Seville in 2008 with one conviction: flamenco serves to improve self-esteem and facilitate personal development. Thus, the psychologists and other professionals who make up the group have worked, over the years, in underprivileged neighborhoods, rural areas or with associations of battered women.

They are not the only groups with whom they have collaborated; ‘Autoestima Flamenca’ has also participated in workshops with people with mental illnesses, exploiting the virtues of gender as a vehicle for health, or in schools, highlighting the characteristics of art that stimulates the five senses.

How flamenco helps the elderly

Flamenco’s links with mental health don’t stop here. This year we were aware of a project of the University of Granada that analyzed its possible impact on the elderly. It was attended by 150 elderly people tutored by psychologists, cantaores (flamenco singers) and bailaores (dancers).

Led by the Psychology professor José Luís Cabezas, the experience worked on the management of emotions, the abilities to communicate them or self-esteem through flamenco. His objective is to demonstrate that genres as deeply rooted as this serves to optimize the well-being of older people and optimize their emotional intelligence.

The success was resounding; not only because of the participation of 150 people but also because of the team of social workers, psychologists and artists who worked with them. A good example of its incidence is that the course had to limit the number of students due to a lack of space.

The UGR program also includes workshops such as ‘Soniqueterapia’ by the dancer Sara Romero, or Jondoterapia, by Iván Centenillo and Victor Segovia, accompanied by Rafa Blanco and José Olmedo -artists who sponsored the ‘Music to Awaken’ workshop, focused on working with Alzheimer’s patients-.

Research in Barcelona

In Barcelona, in the Ciutat Vella district, a course was recently developed which also had as its epicentre the role of flamenco as a therapy for people with mental problems. Thus, Anna Rodríguez, research promoter and psychologist at CPB-Servicios de Salud Mental, wanted to demonstrate that flamenco dancing improved muscular rigidity derived from drugs and helped to maintain eye contact or to tolerate the presence of other people in patients with serious mental health problems.

“After the pilot tests -acknowledges, in statements to La Vanguardia, one of the heads of the Centre where the workshop was held- the students insisted on continuing and we were surprised how they had recovered, both physically and psychologically”. The classes, according to the same source, are developed in groups of fifteen people and are carried out one day per week with a duration of two hours.

Casa del Arte Flamenco: A cathartic spectacle

At Casa del Arte Flamenco we do not dare to call our shows ‘therapeutic’, but with the opinions of our costumers, we do believe we have the right to speak of them as cathartics.

Catharsis is a word that defines emotional, corporal or spiritual purification. In ancient Greece, they alluded to khátharsis as the faculty of the tragedy of redeeming the spectator from his low passions, seeing them projected on the characters of the work in question.

The emotional cascade of a good flamenco show involves the spectator to numerous emotions; you are going to go out being the same and your problems will continue there, but if you manage to empathize with our artists, you will feel a remarkable relief.

El Lebrijano, Andalusian cantaor, said: “The days that I sing and I have it there is no one who can with me”.

You can be a genius in any art and not have it.

“It’s not in the throat; it goes up inside from the soles of the feet. That is to say, it is not a question of faculty, but of true living style; that is, of blood; of very old culture, of creation in the act”, explained the poet García Lorca.

The best flamenco dancer in the country may not know its meaning.

“I believe that it can be found in all trades, although perhaps more so in what we do the gypsies. But it can’t be explained. Suddenly, I do things in singing that I have never done, and that I am never going to do again because I wouldn’t know how to repeat them”, argued Camarón de la Isla in an interview.

But you can play a guitar with broken strings in the street and see it emerge.

What is ‘duende flamenco’?

To put words to something as spiritual and spontaneous as the duende, is not an easy task for anyone, not even for the older ones. They’ve all tried. Poets, singers, guitarists. Not only in Spain, but also abroad. Goethe, German romanticism poet, interpreted it as a “mysterious power that no philosopher could explain”.

He was not wrong. The insistence on finding an exact definition for him is a sign, like many others, of the human need to give a name and surname to everything. Putting words to a feeling is the first step to tame it.

Anatomy of the ‘duende flamenco’

But the leprechaun plays at pleasure; it manifests itself for no apparent reason; it shines when no one expects it; when no one needs it. “A fight and not think,” which said, on another occasion, the aforementioned Federico Garcia Lorca. The poet, always interested in the art of flamenco, theorized about this emotion in “El teatro y la teoría del Duende”, a lecture given in Buenos Aires and Havana in 1933.

But, is there any way to analyse flamenco duende from a psychological point of view?

In the research work of the Granada psychologist Elvira Salazar López, ‘La huella psicológica del duende flamenco’, the aim is precisely to quantify and give an explanation from the psychological and physiological point of view to the duende; it speaks of a “subjective quality of private personal experience, intuitive and based on the quality of the stimulus called Cualia”.

Closely linked to the Cualia as experience, the duende, in this text, is interpreted as something transmitted as an emotion “by the one who executes a step, a touch, a song to the one who sees it, being also a subjective experience that marks whoever weighs it and identifies it before the others”.

The research seeks, through thermography tests that provide the physiological data of the change in temperature collected by the infrared waves reflected on the skin, to study the differences between dancers when they dance a piece of flamenco, in comparison with others in another discipline such as contemporary dance.

The results of the study show, in this way, that there are temperature changes exclusive to flamenco dancers such as “the drop in temperature of the buttocks and the rise in the forearms”, as well as that “duende does not seem to be related to technique; that is to say, not because you dance better you necessarily have more “duende”.

The latter is something that the author of the work seems to arrive at after comparing the results of temperature -which show a correlation depending on the dancer’s level of mastery and experience in flamenco- with the appraisals of those present as to which dancer has more or less duende. For Elvira Salazar and her research, these results would “help to know better how to live an intense emotion like the flamenco duende as a subjective emotional experience”.

Duende flamenco in the Casa del Arte Flamenco

The artists of Casa del Arte Flamenco, during the show, feel and show different flamenco palos, managing to communicate the passion of the genre. Whether they have a duende or not, is something that you will have to decide; yes we assure you that we have the best dancers, guitarists and cantaores of the province. And for us, of course, they have duende.

When we talk about the origins of flamenco and its history, we cannot be categorical. This musical genre does not derive exclusively from the influence of only one culture, although the gypsy culture has had an undeniable weight in its evolution and development. Let’s remember that flamenco comes from the people and the people have always been marked by mestizaje.

Looking back to the 18th-19th century, when historians agree that in some Andalusian cities this art was born, we can see a crossroads of cultures such as African, Christian, Arab and Jewish. This led to the birth of a characteristic that constitutes one of the great riches of the genre: that of acting as a catalyst of influences.

The influence of Africa on the origins of flamenco

Aspects as closely linked to flamenco as ‘cajón’ drink directly from African culture. Various authors go back to the 16th century to document the origins of the “cajón flamenco” as an instrument: according to them, it was the African slaves who remained in South America who began to play percussion in boxes, at times when they were deprived of their traditional drums.

Underlining the influence of Africa on the origins of flamenco, it is also usual to evoke a very characteristic situation of the tribes of this continent: meetings around a bonfire, where dances were organized that functioned as an outlet and a way of unloading the frustration of a people almost always linked to injustice and suffering.

In the documentary Gurumbé, directed by Miguel Ángel Rosales, we can see how all this cultural background brought by African slaves began to spread through Andalusia. The germ of what would one day be flamenco as a genre and art began to nourish itself with its instruments, dances and rhythms.

Maluf, connecting flamenco with Arab culture

The maluf – in Arabic “emerged from tradition” – is a musical style that was born in Al Andalus and had its origins in Seville, Granada and Cordoba. It is spoken of as a genre that, because of its idiosyncrasy, connects flamenco with traditional Arabic music. Supported by classical poetry, it has been an art transmitted orally for centuries and a cornerstone of Andalusian culture.

The improvisation, rhythms and feelings implicit in this genre remind us, unequivocally, of the main features of flamenco. According to experts and historians, the rooting of the maluf in an Andalusian territory as part of Arab and Moorish culture had a great deal of guilt in its origins.

Certain hypotheses dictate that the Moors, who did not leave Spain despite their expulsion, took refuge in mountainous areas, where they mixed with other ethnic groups such as the gypsies or black slaves. These data explain, once again, how fusion and mestizaje were central elements in the genesis of flamenco.

Flamenco and Sephardic music

We speak of Sephardic when we refer to the Jews and descendants of Jews who lived in the Crown of Castile and Aragon until their expulsion by the Catholic Monarchs. There is a belief, among various historians and musicians, that there was a point of contact between flamenco and Sephardic music.

The master guitarist Paco de Lucía, in statements to an interview, explained how “Flamenco was closely linked to the Spanish Jews, the Sephardites”. In this sense, the Algeciras continued to deepen the influence of synagogue chants on flamenco. “I thought that flamenco was mainly linked to Arab culture, but I discovered some Sephardic scores and I realized the influence of the Sephardites of Toledo on flamenco”, he stressed.

In the end, we see that flamenco and vocal styles such as petenera or cante jondo could derive directly from the aforementioned synagogue chants, crucial for understanding Sephardic music and full of complaints and vocal improvisations.

Every year the Festival de Cante de las Minas is celebrated, this being its 59th edition, the festival was born as a singing competition, however, in the 1980s it was expanded with the incorporation of a competitive guitar section, while in 1990 a dance section was annexed.

Therefore we can say that it is undoubtedly one of the most complete festivals that exist today as far as the celebration of flamenco is concerned.

It is celebrated one more year in the town of La Unión (Murcia). They are one of the most prestigious flamenco competitions in Spain, in which dozens of artists participate, including singers, dancers, guitarists and instrumentalists.

In 1984 the Festival Internacional del Cante de las Minas was declared a national tourist interest, and the Cantes Mineros and Cantes de Levante were declared an intangible Asset of Cultural Interest in 2010. In November 2010, moreover, all flamenco was declared by UNESCO ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity’.

Prestigious prizes are awarded in this competition, including the coveted “Lámpara Minera” (Mining Lamp). One of the prizes most coveted by the young promises, which are a springboard for their careers.

Winners of the Festival del Cante de las Minas 2019

El Mati’ is made with the Lámpara Minera. Olga Aznar García, from Barcelona, wins the Desplante Femenino; José Fermín Fernández from Granada wins the Bordón Minero; and Alejandro Solano from Cartagena, winner of the Filón prize playing the marimba.

The winner of Bordón Minero 2019: José Fermín Fernández

José Fermín Fernández studied at the Flamenco School, in the flamenco guitar department with Professor Alberto Fernández. He also studied at the Escuela Municipal de Flamenco.

He has extensive experience in performances, concerts and musical events, highlights the organization of the contest, which adds that the Granadino has done composition work.

The Bordón Minero Prize, worth 6,000 euros, went to José Fermín Fernández from Granada for his performance of Taranto and Bulería.

We have the honour of counting on Fermín Fernández a large number of times in the performances we do at the Casa del Arte Flamenco.

Lámpara Minera 2019 Award: “El Mati” (The Mati)

Winner of the Lámpara Minera in the 59th edition of the Festival del Cante de las Minas de La Unión. The jury has decided to give him the main award of the festival unionense “for his greater mastery and knowledge of mining songs.

Mati began his artistic career at the early age of 12, although it was not until he was 19 that he decided to devote himself fully to it.

He has accompanied such renowned artists as Esperanza Fernández, Rafael Jiménez “Falo”, “El Pele”, Pepe Habichuela, Chano Domínguez, Jorge Pardo, Manolo Marín, Cristina Hoyos, Antonio Canales, Juan Antonio Suárez “Cano”, Sergio de Lope, Manuel Liñán, Pastora Galván, Rafael Campallo and Israel Galván.

In the 2015 edition of the prestigious festival of cante de las minas de la Unión, she won prizes for seguiriya and tangos.

And of course our beloved guitarist José Fermín Fernández who will return to our stage to surprise us with his flamenco art and passion.

We wait for you there to enjoy it and surprise you with all our shows. Don’t miss the opportunity of a few magical hours with the best Spanish art!
